Different Types of RC Car Batteries

Electric cars and trucks need rechargeable rc car batteries to run, these batteries can be nickel-cadmium (NiCD) or nickel-hydride (NiMH). NiCD batteries are an older type while NiMH batteries are a new type. Several manufactures provide batteries, good brands are Sanyo, Tamiya, Orion, Fukuyama, Panasonic and Trinity. Usually, a battery pack with an output of 7.2 volts is needed to run an electric truck or car. Batteries needed to run electric rc cars are usually available in packs of six and over. Fully charged, these battery packs can last for about 10 minutes but this duration can vary according to driving conditions.

Batteries are also required to run radio transmitters, used to control rc cars. A radio transmitter requires 12 volts for operation this can be provided by 8AA sized batteries. Rechargeable batteries can be used in transmitters; they generate 9.6 volts but still provide enough of power. Listed below are some of the many battery packs available in the market:

  • Tamiya Ni-MH 7.2V 3600mAh

One of the best rc battery packs on the market, this quick charging high performance battery pack consists of six cells packed in a transparent unit. Each battery in this pack has 3600mAh capacity.

  • Nosram 1800mAh, 7.2V NiCd

Used in HPI RTR Sprint 2 cars manufactured by HPI Racing these rechargeable batteries come in a battery pack consisting of tested Nosram 1800mAh cells.

  • Powerpack NiMH

This battery pack is manufactured by Nosram and is available in capacities ranging from 1600mAh up to 3600mAh. The Powerpack NiMH can be fast charged, contains high power NiMH cells and provides maximum drive times.

  • Two 7.2V 4200mAh NiMH SC Battery Pack

This two pack set consists of 12 high-quality matched NiMH Sc cells. Each flat top cell has three months warranty and has a nominal capacity of 4200mAh. This pack is perfect for rc cars and trucks and is priced around US $59.

While there are many types of rc car batteries, what is indisputable is that they play a significant role in rc cars and trucks.

How Rc Toys Really Work

Have you ever been lounging on the couch watching late night TV and the infomercial for the "Super Ultra Road-rippin' Devastator" comes on, or seen someone at a park flying a rc airplane and you thought to yourself how does that rc toy work?

In this post I am going to cover the basics of how remote control toys work. You will find out what frequencies are used for RC toys, what the different components are and how they all work together. You will also learn what the difference between radio control and remote control is when talking about toys or models.

Types of RC Toys:

RC toys come in a large variety of models, including: While the mechanics of how they operate can differ greatly between different toys, the basic principle is the same. All radio controlled toys have four main parts:
  • Transmitter - You hold the transmitter in your hands to control the toy. It sends Radio waves to the receiver.
  • Receiver - An antenna and circuit board inside the toy receives signals from the transmitter and activates motors inside the toy as commanded by the transmitter.
  • Motor(s) - Motors can turn wheels, steer the vehicle, operate propellers, etc.
  • Power source
The transmitter sends a control signal to the receiver using radio waves (see How Radio Works for details), which then drives a motor, causing a specific action to occur. The motor in a car may cause the wheels to turn, while the motor in a plane may adjust the flaps. The power source is typically a rechargeable battery pack, but sometimes it's just normal batteries.

In many of the RC toys, the radio controlled motor provides guidance while another source of power provides the locomotion. Here are some examples:

  • A model airplane often has a small gas-powered engine to turn the propeller; the RC motor controls the flaps.
  • A sailboat uses the wind for propulsion; the RC motor controls the rudder.
  • A blimp uses helium or hot air for lift; the RC motors control small propellers.

Remote Control Helicopter Buying Guide

Are you worried that flying a hobby grade Rc helicopter is not for beginners? Its true that experience is required to fly some, but with the right knowledge you can make a good decision by buying the right remote control helicopter.

Lets take the VENOM OZONE 3-CH RTF HELICOPTER for example. At a price under $100 it is a perfect beginner chopper. Unlike many radio control helicopters, the Venom Ozone is easy to fly and you will enjoy it from the first moment you take off of the ground. With a Rc helicopter like this you get not only the power but also the control. I would recommend this chopper to anyone who is new to flying and is looking for a perfect first helicopter.

For the More experienced pilot I would suggest a chopper like a VENOM OCEAN RESCUE. At a price under $200 it is an affordable and very fun helicopter to fly. It is an outstanding ready-to-fly (RTF) micro electric helicopter for flying in all areas. The size of the Ocean Rescue and the stability of its counter rotating blades makes this helicopter an ideal training tool and a great choice for more experienced helicopter pilots. At about 230 grams, the Ocean Rescue will fly for 8-10 minutes on the 800 Mah LiPo battery. For more info check out this link Remote Control Helicopter.

When shopping for a rc helicopter make sure to take you time and find the one that is going to fit your flying needs and experince level. If not taken seriously these toys can be dangerous and could endanger the operator and others near by. Have fun and be safe!!
